Landed cost settings

Catalog item settings

Set a fallback country of origin and HS code.

Landed cost calculations are most accurate when a product-specific country of origin (COO) and HS code (HS code) are provided for each product. Fallback landed cost settings are used when one or both of these details may be missing, allowing you to quote duties and taxes at checkout. When fallbacks are configured, they can be used to generate a landed cost quote, enabling shoppers to complete their orders with duties and taxes paid upfront.

Enter fallback information

We recommend selecting the COO and HS code that best represent where your products are manufactured and the HS code for your primary or most popular product.

  1. Go to Dashboard -> Settings -> Catalog.

  2. Select your fallback COO. This represents the country where your products are manufactured.

  3. Enter a fallback HS code. If you are unsure of your most common HS code, you can use Zonos Classify to determine the HS code for your most frequently sold item. Zonos customers who pay the Zonos Platform fee receive 10,000 classifications per year.

  4. Click Save.

How fallbacks are used

The fallback COO or fallback HS code is used when this information is unavailable at the product level.

Most plugins for Zonos Landed Cost and Zonos Checkout automatically retrieve the COO or HS code from your ecommerce platform. See which platforms can send product-specific HS codes and COO, and which cannot. If you integrate the Checkout API or Landed Cost API, these values can be passed dynamically. If one or both are not passed through the API, your default settings will be used.

If HS codes and COOs are not specified per-product in your ecommerce platform, you can use Zonos Catalog to upload product-specific HS codes and COOs to the Dashboard. The information in the Catalog will always take precedence if available. If not available, data passed from the ecommerce platform will be used. If HS codes or COOs are not present in the Catalog or provided by the ecommerce platform, fallbacks will be utilized to generate a landed cost quote.

Shopify integrations: Shopify integrations using GraphQL will auto-classify items without an HS code to provide a classification at checkout. In this case, we first check the Catalog for the HS code, then the product listing in Shopify. If neither is available, the item will be auto-classified during checkout. The fallback HS code will only be used if the auto-classification process times out. Auto-classifications will apply to the label but will not be added to your Catalog.
